Our Environmental Objectives and Targets
The Accommodation and Hospitality Services Department realise that in order to achieve a high standard of environmental management there will always be a need to set clear and achievable objectives and targets for the short, medium and long term.
The objectives outlined below clearly reflect requirement for continuous improvement in environmental standards as outlined in our Environmental Policy. They have been agreed by the Head of Accommodation and Hospitality Services and will be reviewed annually at the A & HS Health, Safety & Environment Executive Committee.
Short Term (12 months)
1. Establish our Environmental Management System to meet the standard of
BSEN ISO 14001.
2. Improve environmental auditing systems
3. Identify and initiate opportunities for reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption in our buildings by 5 % annually
4. Identify opportunities for reducing water consumption in our buildings by 5 % annually.
5. Reduce food packaging and landfill waste from hospitality by 15% over a year from the baseline figures of 2009/10.
6. Make environmental performance a key criterion with all purchasing exercises.
7. Reduce paper (stationery) usage by 10% over a year,
8. Ensure all staff receive environmental awareness training.
9. Improve waste storage areas around student accommodation.
10. Create greater community involvement by increasing the department’s use of PDP hours by 25%.
11. Initiate a Fuel Free Friday challenge to all staff within the department.
Medium Term (1 to 3 years)
1. Reduce utility and water consumption on an annual basis agreed in conjunction with University carbon reduction targets.
2. Identify and introduce opportunities for waste, recycling, reduction and reusing in all departments.
3. Identify opportunities to improve accommodation waste segregation from residences and improve data gathering.
4. Review the impact of buildings with solar energy solutions.
5. Benchmark performance against other Universities
6. Incorporate energy efficient approaches in refurbishments and capital projects.
Long Term (5 to 10 years)
1. Incorporate latest advances in energy efficiency and environmental management into A & HS Department’s environmental strategy.
